The next room they came to was notable for its spiral stairway, as if it had been constructed inside a tower.

Before either of them could say anything, the stairs started to crumble away, the disappearing steps scaling upward until it reached the top. The effect then cascaded back down, the stairs reappearing, which meant Jake and Catriona were going to have to make a run for it, lest they suffer from a drop.

That was the other thing.

From what Jake could tell, the space directly in front of them, which would have been the center of the room, was missing.

And as Catriona hovered her light orb over it, they saw that it seemed to drop indefinitely, no bottom in sight.

“Which means if we fall…” Catriona said, reading Jake’s mind.

“It won’t be pretty.”

“Well? Bruno?” the beast tamer asked, turning to the pitbull.

Bruno elicited a disappointed grunt as Catriona rummaged through her bag, retrieving the cloth that she used to strap the pitbull to Jake’s back.

Once the dog was secure, they waited for the stairs to cascade back down.

Catriona floated her light orb up and spotted a platform that didn’t seem to move.

There was also a door on the platform.

Catriona turned to Jake, a thin smile on her face as she nodded. “Perhaps one of the keys…”

“We just need to get there first,” said Jake.

“So, good luck?”

“Best of luck is more like it.” Jake brought Catriona into his arms, kissing her on the forehead. She reached her arm back and petted Bruno.

“Here we go,” said Jake as the steps began to reappear.

As soon as they were able, they jumped onto the next step and began running up the spiraling staircase.

At first Jake felt like they were making record time, but then he saw that the steps in front of them were starting to disappear.

Blood surging to his appendages, he grabbed Catriona’s hand and took off, Bruno letting out a frightened yelp.

Reaching the last step before it vanished, he shot himself forward, Catriona and Jake just barely making it to the solid platform.

The beast tamer scrambled up to the top, climbing up his body.

When she was up, she reached down to help Jake, who had already started to press himself up, his enhanced strength in the Orange Vale making this feat relatively easy.

He could feel Bruno trembling as he stood, Jake way too close to the edge of the platform, his body responding through a tingling sensation.

He stepped back and bumped into Catriona, who had already turned to the door to test out the keys that Bruno had dug up.

“It just keeps going,” said Jake as he looked up to see the staircase spiraling around this cylindrical chamber, the steps appearing as they made their way up, vanishing as they came down.

“Ah, got it!” said Catriona, sliding the dragon key into the door. “We’re in.”

Jake heard a clicking sound, followed by a squeak as Catriona opened the door.

She sent the light orb in, the two of them seeing that the room was relatively small, no larger than Jake’s apartment in the Bowery.
